Amy Schumer is a Hollywood actress and comedian who made her film debut in 2015 by starring in the movie Trainwreck. As this article continues, please do not forget that she also wrote the script for the movie. The photo below shows Amy with a couple of other protestors at the Senate confirmation hearing for Judge (now Supreme Court Justice) Brett Kavanaugh. Ms. Schumer later agreed to be arrested by the police. Now if her last name sounds awfully familiar even though you’ve never seen Ms. Schumer perform, you’d be correct if you guessed it was because her uncle is none other than Democrat Senate Minority Leader Chuck (You) Schumer.
Before we unpack the idea of Ms. Schumer protesting the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, let’s take a little bit closer look at the plot of her big Hollywood debut, and the script she wrote. In fact, we can learn all we need to know simply by watching the official trailer.
Note that her character (named Amy) says in a voice over,
I’m just a modern chick who does what she wants. Last week, it was this guy.
Wow. What a great role model! </sarcasm>
Ms. Schumer plays a woman who frequently gets drunk and has shallow sexual encounters with a never-ending succession of strange men. If her character had been male, he would have (or at least should have) been labeled a Lothario or Casanova personality who should be understood to be a sexual predator, or seen as a serious alcoholic with low self-esteem and a complete lack of control over his inhibitions. In real life, women are said to be “easy” or called sluts by their critics, and males are finally facing equivalent shaming by being identified as sexual predators for similar behavior. Hollywood has absolutely zero credibility when it comes to giving lectures about morality to the general public.
Just stop already.
Being a reasonably successful Hollywood actress (and relative of Chuck (You) Schumer), Ms. Schumer has been able to accrue an impression $16 million dollars in net worth, according to this celebrity net worth website that claims to know these things. I applaud her success, and do not wish her career to suffer because of her political views. The little blurb about her career on the website mentioned that Amy received a whopping $9 million dollar advance for her autobiography, currently the third highest book advance for the genre paid by a publisher. Bill and Hillary Clinton currently hold the top two spots, but when Barack and Michelle Obama collect their cool $40 million dollar advance, Ms. Schumer should drop no lower than fifth on the list of highest paid authors for their autobiography.
Now if I believed in socialism, which is the direction the Democratic Party is currently headed, I’d be demanding that some of Ms. Schumer’s wealth be redistributed, and specifically to me. After all, I’ve written six books and haven’t come anywhere close to making a million dollars, much less $9 million. But because I’m a huge believer in capitalism and the free market system, I would be a hypocrite if I asked, begged, or demanded that my government take wealth from a more successful person and give it to me. I don’t begrudge Amy Schumer her income. Just because I work hard doesn’t mean that people must pay me, unless they want me to continue working hard.
But I do work hard, and I would like to get paid something for all the writing I do.
Normally I would have turned on the limiting filter than would encourage subscribing to my website for the nominal fee of $1 per month just to motivate me to produce more material on my blog, but I want readers to understand the conscious choice I’m making. If you don’t subscribe, I’m not going to be producing any income from my blog (nothing new) and have no motive to write other than when it suits me. I thought about selling spots for advertising on my website instead of a subscriber/membership model, but then I would helping Google get richer, and I don’t want to do that. I’d probably have a stroke if Planned Parenthood somehow managed to place an ad on my website. I don’t want the money that bad. I’d rather stop blogging and focus on whatever writing will pay me.
If I know I have an audience who likes and wants my content, they will subscribe, and I’ll want to keep current. My problem is that I don’t know how to monetize my abilities as a writer. I know how to write a book, but I don’t know how to market them. Amy Schumer’s publisher can get her book on the shelves at Barnes and Noble and the other major bookstores. My wife is my publisher on a part-time basis and we have no marketing budget. You can find my books on Amazon, but only if you know where to look. My point is, there is more to becoming a successful author than just writing a book, even if it’s a good book. And in a capitalist society, just because another person enjoys more success doesn’t mean that it has come at your expense. It’s all about creating demand. And how does one create demand? I’m still trying to figure that one out, but name recognition certainly doesn’t hurt, does it?
Which brings us back to Ms. Amy Schumer, and her protests against the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Does anyone think she realizes that it’s terribly hypocritical to star in a movie that sort of glamorizes and glorifies the same sort of drunken promiscuous behavior that coincidentally sounds an awful lot like what Dr. Christine Blasey Ford tried to scrub from her past?
Does Ms. Schumer care if conservatives recognize her hypocrisy? No, of course not. She will only care if her next movie bombs at the box office. You know what they say about publicity–even bad publicity can be good publicity, because it creates name recognition. Why did she want to be arrested by the police? The answer should be painfully obvious, in my opinion. She’s increasing her visibility and thus helping to sell her books and movies.
In other words, this was nothing more than a publicity stunt.
